Backend Engineer

Job description

As a Backend Engineer at Sky Engine AI, you will play a foundational role in designing and building the core infrastructure that supports our AI models, data pipelines, and client-facing applications. You will work alongside AI researchers, data scientists, and frontend engineers to build scalable APIs, real-time data services, and secure backend systems that handle large volumes of structured and unstructured data.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and high-performance APIs using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop and optimize data pipelines that power AI models and machine learning workflows.
• Build and manage integrations with third-party AI services, cloud platforms, and internal data warehouses.
• Design, implement, and optimize database schemas and queries for performance and reliability.
• Implement secure authentication, authorization, and data protection across all systems.
• Collaborate with AI and data science teams to deploy, monitor, and scale ML models in production.
• Write clean, modular, and well-tested code with a strong focus on maintainability.
• Participate in code reviews, architectural decisions, and Agile sprint ceremonies.
• Monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous performance improvements.
• Document system architectures, APIs, and deployment processes for internal and external stakeholders.
• Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and recommend improvements to the tech stack.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js and JavaScript / TypeScript.
• Experience with Express.js, Fastify, or similar backend frameworks.
• Solid understanding of database design and optimization for both relational (PostgreSQL / MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases.
• Experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and cloud-native services.
• Knowledge of version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience working with Docker and containerized environments is a strong plus.
• Understanding of microservices architecture and event-driven systems.
• Experience integrating with AI/ML models or working in data engineering contexts is highly desirable.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams (AI researchers, data scientists, frontend engineers).
• Fluent in English (written and verbal).
